How to mitigate the risk of Strep A infection

There are steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of infection.
This article will help you to keep the children under your care, and you family safe from Strep A
and other illnesses caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi.

What is Strep A?

Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a common bacteria. Lots of us carry it in our throats and on our skin and it doesn’t always result in illness. However, GAS does cause a number of infections, some mild and some more serious.

The most serious infections linked to GAS come from invasive group A strep, known as iGAS.

These infections are caused by the bacteria getting into parts of the body where it is not normally found, such as the lungs or bloodstream.

Strep A is particularly dangerous for children under 10 and has resulted in the tragic deaths of 9 children in recent weeks.

Steps everyone should take

wash hands

1. Regularly wash your hands

Because streptococcus bacteria lives on skin, it’s important to regularly wash hands using an anti-bacterial soap, particularly before and after meals.

Hands should be washed front and back for at least 20 second.

You should also clean under your fingernails!

2. Disinfect surfaces & electronic devices

Whenever you touch something, you’re transferring whatever is on your hands to that surface. Whoever touches it next, picks it up.

Surfaces can easily be cleaned with appropriate disinfectants, but it’s harder to clean electronics which often carry the most pathogens.

We recommend SaniGuard Dry on Contact surface cleaner. It can safely be used on almost anything and costs under £15 for a large can.

3. Destroy pathogens in whole rooms

Because an infected person will discharge tiny droplets of containing the Strep A bacteria into the air, simply by breathing, coughing or sneezing, it’s impossible to manually clean and disinfect every nook and cranny.

We recommend regularly cleansing entire rooms using a Total Release Fogging Canister.

These amazing products kill 99.99% of known pathogens in entire rooms meaning that missed spots and even places that can’t be reached using traditional cleaning methods and are free of pathogens.

These canisters come in three sizes, perfect for rooms of almost any size and even vehicles.

4. Disinfect whole buildings and create develop a decontamination routine

Large spaces like hospitals, schools, shopping centres, etc. are more of a challenge. Not only are they likely to see more footfall, and therefore are much more likely to harbour unwanted nasties, but it’s also easier for cleaners to miss crucial areas and it’s much harder to keep on top of an effective regime.

There are however cost effective solutions for effective decontamination that also reduce the manual labour required to keep spaces clean.

We recommend using dedicated fogging equipement on a regular basis to kills pathogens in large areas. There are a number of options from hand held devices to more advanced solutions that are simply wheeled into an area, activated and then left for as little as 20 minutes before an area is safe for use.
